The Season of Great Lent

The season of Great Lent is an invitation to enter into the wilderness of Christ—the wilderness of the Jordan where Jesus fasted for 40 days. The mysteries of Lent are inexhaustible because the Lord Himself has deposited into it His mystery—the mystery of the Messiah, the mystery of salvation. There is a great difference between spending this blessed season only in prayer and fasting, in which case it becomes at best an ascetic fast, and between living it in actual fellowship with Christ in the wilderness of His fast, in which case it becomes a source of salvation for us. The Holy Spirit enters us through the mystical gate of this wilderness in order to have actual fellowship in Christ's fast. As a result, the fast becomes a true season of salvation and transformation.
